We advocate for motorcyclists through political actionParking Advocacy
Parking issues in NYC have taken up much of our time and attention this month. We're looking
forward to securing dedicated two-wheel only parking on scattered streets throughout two
neighborhoods. Jesse Erlbaum is heading up the Parking Committee which is producing a
presentation for the early April meeting of the Transportation Committee of Community Board
2 in Manhattan (running from Houston St. to 14th St. on the West Side). We also plan to take a
modified version of this presentation to the late April meeting of CB4 (stretching from 14th St.
all the way up to 60th St. on the West Side). If you live in these neighborhoods we would be
very happy to have you join us for these meetings. This is very exciting since success in one
Community Board will provide a template for us to take to other Community Boards
throughout the five boroughs. If you are not sure of the Community Board where you live go to
the CB website here.
Muni-Meters
The Task Force has been working on a solution to our Muni-Meter issues: We have no place to
secure the receipt. So far, NYC DOT has responded negatively to our proposal to adopt the
'Toronto solution', exempting all motorcycles and scooters from purchasing a receipt. In other
words, they are currently not willing to give us free parking at NYC Muni‐Meters. NY City
Council Member Jessica Lapin has withdrawn Int. 980, a somewhat vague bill which required
NYC DOT to come up with a solution, and replaced it with Int. 46 which specifically requires NYC
DOT to sell us some sort of locking pouch. The Task Force does not support this proposed
legislation. We will be meeting with Lapin and the co-sponsors of Int. 46 in order to kill this
unacceptable bill. Check out the proposed legislation here.
NYC Riders’ Tip Sheets
Take your bike to the plane – for free! The NYMSTF website now has updated parking
information including tip sheets with directions to free and legal dedicated two‐wheel parking
areas at JFK and Newark airports, as well as hints for keeping your ride safe & secure for onstreet
parking around the city. We’d also like to hear your suggestions on new topics for rider
education & advocacy. Visit us at http://nymstf.org.Int. 1086: Bad Legislation
The Task Force has been agitating against Int. 1086, a proposed NYC law so poorly written that
it would have exposed any shop or individual selling or servicing any motorcycle or scooter to
huge fines. Like Int. 416a, which was squashed last year, 1086 was aimed at loud pipes. The bill
relies on a labeling standard with which no stock motorcycle or pipe complies, putting us all at
great financial risk, particularly the shops upon which we rely. Thankfully, this bill seems to be
going nowhere, but we're staying vigilant until it's officially withdrawn. Check out the proposed
legislation here.
