The NYMSTF was founded in 2009 following the loss of Manhattan's last motorcycle parking area near South Street Seaport, the removal of motorcycle -friendly language from Mayor Bloomberg's failed congestion pricing plan, increased harassment from the NYPD and the New York State Police, continued misappropriation of our safety funds and the introduction of NYC Council legislation that could have literally outlawed motorcycles altogether.
Motorcycles and scooters are a fuel efficient, congestion reducing form of transportation. We believe that increased scooter and motorcycle use benefits all New Yorkers. Our Task Force volunteers work with local and state agencies and elected officials, community boards and even block associations to overcome pervasive and undeserved negative stereotypes, promote the benefits of motorcycling, improve the language of vague laws which invite overzealous enforcement at our expense, and promote laws that benefit motorcycle and scooter riders.
Fact: There are 620,000 licensed motorcycle operators in New York - more than 5% of all licensed drivers in the state. New York City alone has over 37,000 registered motorcycles.
We continue to create safe, designated parking areas for motorcycles and scooters and to solve the challenges riders face using the city's Muni Meters. Motorcycle -friendly cities such as San Francisco, Toronto and London are just a few of the outstanding models that have inspired us.
Some of our other issues include road safety, legalization of lane sharing or filtering, promoting access of two wheeled vehicles to New York's ferries and the elimination of constitutionally questionable targeted enforcement which penalizes law abiding motorcyclists.
The NYMSTF is staffed by experienced, passionate motorcycle riders with backgrounds in law, engineering, IT, journalism and more. We are the go-to consulting organization for New York's agencies to vet motorcycle- related proposals, policies and legislation. The NYMSTF works with the AMA, ABATE of New York and Long Island, AIM/NCOM and with NCOM's help, dozens of motorcyclists' rights organizations (MROs) worldwide.
Drop us a line if you have an issue that needs our attention, or if you would
like to join us in our mission to improve conditions for scooter riders and
motorcyclists in New York!
